The Engineering Intern position is intended to assist the engineering team with project support while providing the student with valuable work experience related to their chosen field of engineering.
The student should be junior level or higher with a path to obtain their degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited college. General coursework should include design related classes in addition to common pre-requisites in physics (statics and dynamics), fluids, material science, and heat transfer.
Provide drawing and technical support to the product engineering team. This is successfully accomplished by understanding and adhering to project requirements, utilizing and applying quality tools and methods, recognizing opportunities, and pursuing continuous improvement in all aspects of product design. These efforts will have a direct impact on reducing labor and material costs, while improving value, reliability, and performance.
Typical Job Duties:
*Draw and detail components using CAD software.
*Revise and update existing drawings. Properly name and locate drawings in appropriate file locations.
*Build product samples using machine tools (lathe, mill, drill press, saw) and hand tools
*Prepare, set up, and perform product and lab tests.
*Gather and document data from product testing, summarize and provide to project manager.
*Prepare Bills of Materials (BOM) and complete cost analysis.
*Prepare and document Product Change Requests (PCR) as directed by Product Engineer.
*Communicate and provide project status/updates to team lead and other associates within engineering team.
*Assist with troubleshooting and root cause analysis efforts for various product issues.
*Maintain project list and provide routine updates on activities.
*Involved in continuous improvement initiatives following process improvement methods.
*Maintain and organize lab area following 5S principles.
*Quality - Integrates quality at the source thinking and activities in daily, individual, team and project work.
*Cost reduction project support
*Solid Works Parts Creation and Sub Assembly Generation
*Fabrication Manual Cleanup
*Data gathering and summarizing results
Job Skills and Knowledge:
*Must be organized, methodical, quality minded, detail oriented, and handle multiple tasks simultaneously.
*Must be flexible with job assignments, able to work independently and well with others (team environment).
*Must communicate well and properly document results of test procedures, and have knowledge of SWF 5S Program
*Must manage multiple small or limited scope projects.
*Position takes direction from Lead or Senior Product Design Engineer and/or Engineering Manager.
*Experience with CAD drawing (SolidWorks, Auto Cadd)
*Experience and knowledge of typical drafting standards
*Experience with metal and wood machine tools
*Data collection and management of database.
*Short memo and lab report writing.
*Strong general math skills (add, subtract, multiply, divide, percentages, fractions, metric conversions, algebra, and geometry)
