Description

JOB PURPOSE: Inspect and certify grades of purchased lumber.  Must be NHLA Certified.  Ensure wood meets minimum quality standards of dryness & stress and maintaining proper inventory levels of each thickness.  Maintain boiler chemical mix to insure boiler and steam lines longevity. JOB DUTIES: Ensure product quality. Proper drying of lumber: lumber sample checks, stress tests, setting lumber drying schedules in computer of new kilns. Determine selection of lumber to be dried.  Maintain proper inventory levels of kiln dried lumber.  Maintain boiler: performing water chemistry analysis, determining timings for blow-downs, monitoring boiler pressure, water temperature, ash removal, preparing for yearly cleaning and inspection. Monitor and manage pre-driers for temperature/humidity and wet bulb tub water levels. Receive in-coming loads of green lumber and kiln dried (KD) lumber; input related data. Initiate appropriate recordkeeping documentation for all lumber movements from receiving/stacker/pre-driers/kilns/dry barn. Use appropriate power tools, scales, computer spreadsheets to perform tasks/duties.  Support team leaders, group leaders and managers. Perform other related duties as needed, including being powered-industrial truck (hi-lo) driver for outside wood yard team. Maintain clean and safe work environment. Follow 5S procedures to maintain work environment in a neat and orderly condition. Follow safety policies and procedures. Attend huddles and other meetings to ensure smooth flow of communication. SCOPE OF RESPONSIBILITY: Determines timeliness and schedule of drying SWF's wood-supply chains and maintaining incoming wood resources among 6 kilns, 2 pre-dryers and dry barn; over 10mmbf board feet per year with estimated material value in excess of $8 million.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: Minimum - NHLA Certified Lumber Grader; Able to use computer above basic level. Can manage time efficiently. Able to obtain powered industrial truck license (hi-lo) Must possess current valid Michigan driver�s license. Preferred - Understanding of Quality methodology. Knowledge of and experience with boiler and kiln operations related to drying green lumber. Proficiency with driving powered industrial truck (hi-lo) KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Able to perform mathematical calculations involved with wood drying processes, steam gauge settings, boiler operations. Able to calculate and mix chemical amounts related to treating boiler system water Ensures quality by: Using project plan and project schedule methodology Clearly defining and utilizing processes in daily work Understanding SFW team structure, roles and responsibilities.  Integrating process methodology into daily work; 5S, Q@S etc.  Look for ways to streamline work processes. Identify quality gaps. Share best practices. Able to proficiently & safely use related power tools in performing required tasks. Able to proficiently & safely drive powered-industrial-truck (Hi-lo).
